Instead of saints, pilgrims, or ascetics, what kind of person does our culture tend to put up on a pedestal for us to admire/emulate? Do you think the hopes/fears of the average person today is oriented toward the eternal world, or the temporal world? Toward spiritual purity, or material prosperity?
Great question. Majority of the world currently focuses on satisfy our material desires, (Food, Sex, Family, Money, Honor, Power, Knowledge, etc). However, there is a growing percentage of humanity that desires Spiritual Fulfillment. These people are at the top of the pyramid of development so to speak. However, this desire for Spirituality will eventually spread throughout the whole of Humanity until Spirituality will become the dominating desire within Humanity. Certain people tend to be more spiritual than others because of different brain activity, which is why I don’t think you can sum up the beliefs of the average person so easily. I personally am much more concerned with the temporal world because I do not believe in sky fairies, and would rather enjoy my time on earth than live a bland joyless life based on the unsubstantiated fear of eternal damnation.
