What is the motivation for someone to kiss a corpse in a casket? What does that kiss symbolize.

I don’t know but it freaks the crap out of me. Both my grampas died in the past year and everybody was kissing them and touching theirs hands and even encouraged me to hold the ones hand. I don’t think so.

I was having panic attacks just being in the same room.

How can I find motivation to do anything- that might help me break the horrible grip of extremely debilitating depression?

Exercise, absolutely. You also need to have social interaction outside your house daily.

I have a five minute or so presentation to do for a college class. My topic is motivation and I need some ideas and examples of things I can use. YouTube videos would be great, maybe clips from TV shows or movies, or some kind of activity I can have the class do. I already plan on making a PowerPoint with some general information, like what it motivation, what is the difference between motivation and determination, and examples of each, but I don’t think this can fill up five minutes. Any advice would be great!

Hey Chris,

Sounds great. I’m a also a college student just finishing my law degree. Recently I was asked to do a presentation on motivation to a company in my home town. Their employees were losing motivation and the company felt this was effecting their performance. Anyway I spent a lot of time thinking about it and ended up doing a presentation with audio and video that went for 45 minutes.

So here is some of my advice…I hope it’s useful.

1) I think using a video is a great idea. I’ve just had a look over youtube to see what was around and there are a number of great speeches particularly used in football movies (Remember the titans, Any given Sunday seem to be the best). Just search "inspirational speech" and see what you like. My advice would be to use the video at the beginning of the presentation to get the audience engaged. For an effective presentation you need to do something that other people do not. You need to find a way to stand out so I’d be using the video at the start to grab attention.

2) Don’t overload the slides. One mistake people fall into is putting too much text on their slides. This drags the attention away from you and often leads to the audience missing the main points because they are so caught up in all the detail. So my advice is have no more than 3-5 points per slide and don’t use entire sentences but short sharp points. E.g. Motivation = determination towards a destination etc.

3) In terms of content you should have no trouble filling up 5 min (the vid will prob go for 1 minute anyway). I break motivation down into three elements. 1) Perception – Motivation stems from your perspective towards something. If you have a positive perception then you will more motivated to do it. If you have a negative perception then you will be less likely to do it. Think about studying. If you see studying as boring then you will be low on motivation. However if you can find interesting courses and engage with the material, motivation will come much easier. 2) Destination – motivation can be defined as the force that takes you where you want to go. So, naturally, you need to have somewhere to go if you want motivation. In other words you need a target or a goal. Notice in the inspirational speeches that there is always some sort of target painted for the audience by the coach or speaker. He/she creates excitement through some grand vision. This is a key motivational tool used by some of the best motivational speakers such as Tony Robbins who I’ve seen 3 times live. So speak about destination or goals if you like. 3) Justification – Motivation stems from your reasons for doing something. In fact motivation can also be defined as your reason for acting. So having a purpose is crucial. Think about the purpose behind the football team that is down by 16 points at half time in the championship game. Their purpose is massive. They have a huge reason. Thus, they have great motivation.

So, these are the three main points to motivation, at least in the way I teach it. Feel free to use as many of them as you like Chris.

I wish you all the best and hope this helps.

Oh, you mentioned doing an activity. I agree with the previous response that maybe you won’t have time. However, I can see you reasoning behind it and I think its sound. In fact interaction and audience participation is essential for a great presentation. Maybe instead of an activity you could ask questions that students can relate too. Such as, put your hands up if you’ve ever left an assignment till the night before it’s due? How about till the morning that it was due? etc. These are great way to engage the audience. You might want to do this after the initial video!

Good luck and enjoy!

Hey guys
I am doing a research paper and I need some help. I need some good sources to find the answer of this question (What was the motivation of the Egyptians for building the pyramids?) Please cite the source. I am also looking for the different construction methods or tools that the Egyptians used for building the pyramids.
Thanks

This answer is about pyramids in Egypt. Pyramids were also constructed in ancient Greece and Mesoamerica. Flat topped pyramids were constructed in ancient China.

Pyramids in Egypt served as tombs, initially only for kings and close members of the royal family, but eventually came to be used (in much smaller forms) by the general populace.

The pyramid is thought to have developed out of the mastaba tomb. Mastaba is an Arabic word, meaning bench, which was applied to the flat-topped, slope sided superstructures of tombs. The pyramid is also thought to be associated with solar worship and the "ben-ben" stone which played a major role in sun worship and was vaguely pyramid shaped.

In the 3rd Dynasty, several mastabas were stacked forming the Step Pyramid of King Djoser. By the 4th Dynasty in the reign of Snefru attempts at building a true pyramid were underway. The pyramids of the 4th and 5th Dynasties, including those at Giza, essentially reflect the further refinement of the pyramid, the chambers within it, and the associated temple complexes. Eventually the standard style was an orientation of east to west (significant in Egyptian religion), with a pyramid temple, located directly on the east side of the pyramid, and a causeway leading to the "valley temple" located near the Nile at the edge of the cultivation.
While it is accepted by reputable Egyptologists that pyramids served as burials for kings, the exact details of the theology behind them remains unclear. One idea, popularized I believe by Dr. Mark Lehner, one of the foremost experts on Egyptian pyramids, is that pyramids served as "resurrection machines" providing all the necessary means for eternal life with the gods for the dead king.
In the late 5th Dynasty in the Pyramid of Unas at Saqqara, we have the first appearance of formal texts within the pyramid itself – the appropriately-named Pyramid Texts. These texts are somewhat esoteric and are essentially a collection of spells, stories, and guides relating to the Underworld. Initially these texts were limited to royalty. In succeeding pyramids, elements of the Pyramid Texts were included in the "Coffin Texts" of the First Intermediate and Middle Kingdom and in the "Book of the Dead" of the New Kingdom – texts available to a broad spectrum of society.

Pyramid construction continued in the Middle Kingdom – again limited to royalty, but not on the grand scale of the Old Kingdom. The last known royal pyramids located in Egypt are that of King Ahmose, founder of the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom (ca. 1550 BCE) and the pyramid-cenotaph constructed for his grandmother, Queen Tetisheri. Both are located at Abydos.

In the New Kingdom, pyramids came to be part of tombs for reasonably wealthy private individuals – frequently added to the exterior portico area of rock-cut cliff tombs or appearing as architectural elements of brick constructed tombs in varous parts of Egypt.

The Napatan and Meroitic kingdoms in Nubia (modern Sudan) also used the pyramid for royal burials at sites such as El-Kurru and Nuri. While the Napatan kings ruled Egypt for a time during the 25th Dynasty and were buried in pyramids, those pyramids were located in Nubia proper.

Pyramid construction relied on highly skilled teams of workmen who were housed nearby the pyramid fields – in the Old Kingdom located in the general vicinity of the ancient capital Memphis at sites now knows as Giza, Saqqara, Meidum, and Dashur. A few pyramids in the Middle Kingdom were located near the Fayum, roughly Middle Egypt.
In addition to the full-time workmen, there was likely a seasonal labor requirement asked of the lower classes of Egyptian society – a sort of taxation, often referred to by the French term "corvee" labor. This is distinct from slavery. While the ancient Greek historian Herodotus (writing over a thousand years after the construction of the pyramids at Giza) reported that he was told the pyramids at Giza were constructed by slaves, Herodotus was wrong about any number of things in his reports and may not even have visited Egypt in person, so he is usually not taken as a realiable source.

Tools included square levels and plumb bobs, set squares, and vertical plumb bobs (which can be seen in the Cairo Museum), as well as copper blades for stone cutting, pounding stones for dressing stone blocks, and a ridged, mushroom shaped device that may have served as a sort of "proto-pulley."

I know HOW to lose it, it’s just the motivation I need. Thanks!

I know exactly how you feel I always procrastinate about losing weight. Once I start exercising I will go for a week and then stop and gain everything back. I herd some things that will help you but its strange (it works tho) When you weigh alot you are very depressed and its almost impossible to lose weight but if you start working out you feel better. I weigh about 220 im also 14 and im trying really hard to lose weight but i keep gaining… Other tips are: smelling vanilla can stop your craving for sweets, chewing sugar free gum can temporarily stop your hunger, the color blue is a very calming color. If i get bored i get hungry so I try to drink a sweet tea (low cal) to calm my hunger (and nerves). If you eat out of boredom you can always try to get out of the house. If its beautiful outside and walk to get some fresh air. If you have a friend take them with you to go walk its always better to have someone to support you. Give yourself rewards. If you worked out say 3 times a week for 20 minutes reward yourself with a book or a shirt you like never EVER reward yourself with food!! If you did bad a week then cut out a few hours of t.v. dont let your bad week make you gain weight by returning to food. Join a sport, go to a gym. anything is better than staying inside. I suggest taking vitamins too. Get out an mp3 player and put on some motivational music on it and start working out. The way im getting motivated is there is this guy i like and i want to look pretty for him next year when he goes to my school. Im also sick of everyone picking on me about my weight. and the fact that i dont look cute in my clothes. You can do it!! Just never give up!! :D

Why do some people choose to do bad in life when they could do so much better? My exboyfriend would have a job and then loose it. He said he hated being apart of the coroporate machine and would way rather be unemployed. For the record he was a total pothead and had no motivation for a lifestyle outside of that community; if you know what I mean..
Why do so many people get ingrained into drug culture like this?

part of it
because much of our culture is superficial
and antagonistic to those who dont buy into its artificial self justification
and to try to break free from the hold
but of course generally bad alternative
but now you now why
in part
maybe:)

I am lazy, unmotivated and always procrastinate. I would much rather be having fun or do nothing rather than studying or going to class. High school came easy for me and graduated with a 4.02 GPA, got accepted to U of Michigan and thought college would be a breeze. Turns out I was dead wrong. So basically because i had no real study habits in high school, i have poor study habits here. I think i just need motivation but don’t know where to find it. Where is a good place for me to start?

College is a big adjustment. Part of the problem is developing a new routine. See, in high school you had a little more structure, where College expects you to manage your time yourself.

First ask yourself, when do you feel the most productive. Some people get more things done in the morning and some at night. Figure out when you are more likely to get school work done and set aside specific time.

Once you add a routine and focus on times you are more likely to study, you’re motivation will return.

Every one says i am beautiful and unique and they love my hair and that i could be a model. One thing tho… I am 5feet 8 and 170 pounds. I know i am over weight but i can’t get the motivation to lose weight. Btw, i am 13 years old. I just want a good future. Be nice.

1. First start by getting up earlier than usual. Around 5:30 AM to do some of you workouts. Getting up early shocks your metabolism because the body needs more energy to get going. Right? This will start your system on the road to weight loss. That early start with about 10 minutes of stretching. Have a cup of coffee to get the blood going also.

2. Do all the sit-ups you can. Just do them. 15 or 20 whatever, we don’t have a lot of time to work with. Rest 1 minute repeat, do this for 6 sets. Already you are breathing hard and feel worn, because the body is working extra hard at being up earlier and then going right into exercise. If the early morning hour lets you get your cardio in, go ahead and do it. 30 minutes.

3. Diet. Cut all current meal portions in half, just cut them in half, nothing fancy or complicated, CUT IN HALF! Cut out all bread products, all gravies, candies, chips, night snacks, etc. If you crave at night eat a banana, other fruit or best a non-fat yogurt. There are some tasty ones out there.

4. In the evening do another 6 sets of sit-ups maxing out each set. Cardio again. The trick is to stay with getting up earlier. Yes it’s hard, that’s why it is so effective. Why do you think the Army gets up so early, it is intense training to the max.

ok i didnt write this but i copied and pasted the words but i just put it in number order and made it easier to read.

I am doing a project in my psychology class and I have to figure out where motivation comes from. I have to figure out where motivation comes from in the work place. Does one get motivated by pay increases etc, or does motivmotivation come from other factors such as personal goals that one has set for ones self. What motivates you?

Please let me know what you think and why.

Well there are two types of motivation, extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from outside an individual. Examples of that at work would be earning a paycheck, or getting a promotion. Intrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from inside an individual. Examples of that would be like self satisfaction at work, knowing that you can do good work, and you have the desire to do good work. I am motivated by both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. At school i do good because i know if i do i will get a good job and be able to afford nice things in life. Also i do it because i like looking smart and having the ability to answer questions and help people do good in school.
